Like the flick of a light, or the jingle of a bell, the thought was bright and cheery. Of course, I should! On the days that I sweep through the housekeeping, I should go ahead and top off the salt cellar, pepper mill, and oil bottles I keep near the kitchen range, just like I restock and refill the toilet tissue and soap dispensers in the bathroom.

In the middle of a rumpled morning, Maggie Mae and I threw up our hands and headed out for a hike. The twiggy forest was barely tinged green and there, in the middle of it all, the first white sprays of wild hawthorn were just beginning to bloom! I paused beside a branch covered with delicate, open petals and breathed in the inexpressible scent of spring.

A friend is coming for dinner and I decide on serving her breakfast: poached eggs on sourdough toast topped with micro greens, fresh chives, a crack of salt and pepper, and a drizzle of vinaigrette, with bacon on the side. But first, I have to take a shovel to the snow that’s fallen all day and buried the chives growing in the bed near the front porch steps.

I flip the calendar forward to May, to check on things. And there, near the end, I see Concert. And I remember the call from our eldest, when he asked us, as he munched his lunch, if we’d want to drive over for a spring outdoor concert, his treat. We looked at our schedules, and texted him in reply, Go ahead and buy the tickets! His response? Yeah! Let’s gooo so excited!
It’s fun when your grown-up kid is that enthused about attending a concert with his parents. So, it’s Kitchen Dwellers for us, end of May.

A gale of freezing wind held on for the third day in a row, the bone-chilling kind that cuts through every layer you have, the hurry-it-up kind that makes you zip around town and down your errands list lickety-split so you can get back to a warm house, wool slippers, and a cup of tea.

Purple surprises in the bed along the terrace, peeking out from their cover of last year’s leaves: johnny jump-ups, and two, clever grape hyacinth, hold-outs from that spring when the bed was full of them. That’s what I like most about spring, all the surprises.
