A veil of fog, a sugarplum dawn. Steam curls from the kettle’s spout. I order the ham. Make the beds. Count the pillows. Scribe Merry Christmas! on a wonky stack of cards.
Dust scatters from the saw, an evergreen falls. Berries, grasses, cones, seeds, greens, vines, by armloads, found. Citrus bursts from an orange’s peel. A chicken roasts. Honey ribbons into a jar.
The iron sighs over wrinkled napkins. I polish silver. Draw an edge across the knives. A cloth across the windows. A mop across the floors. A line across the list.
Bubbles dance at dusk. Candles flicker at the glass. I stitch stitches and tie bows. Pull a sheet of crackled cookies from the heat.
From a darkened hill, coyotes laugh. The moon melts, and disappears.
