Read the Room - where I walk you through a room and let you see with me. Read the Room is my antidote to the common, overwhelming message of “Shop the room!” This series is meant to bring balance. To inspire and inform, with ideas and concepts, with ways and means, for living in and furnishing our homes. To help us all remember that a beautiful room is so much more than a catalog of specific goods to be acquired.
The exterior color of Belmont Cottage was inspired by the wild growing goldenrod flowers that surround the cottage in summer. The front porch, which was in considerable disrepair, was rebuilt, and a new roof was applied. The original double-hung windows still have their wavy glass panes.
Upon walking up the stairs, crossing the covered porch, and entering the front door of the Dutton Belmont cottage, you’ll find the living room. Directly across from the front door is a fireplace flanked by two antique upholstered slipper chairs. The simple fireplace surround is made of brick, and the wall paneling (found on this wall only in this room), the mantle, and the brickwork is all painted the same, Taylor Grey by Benjamin Moore. The other walls in the cottage are lime washed in color 101 by JH Wall Paints. The ceilings have the same board and batten treatment as the kitchen, and the wood floors and trim are original. A collection of art and artifacts lines the mantle shelf.
