I have been pregnant or nursing a babe for the last 15 years. I recently had to give myself permission that my wardrobe didn’t need to be curated or high quality, because I had absolutely zero idea of what I even liked or what works on my body. Giving yourself permission is such a gift. Though I am looking forward to knowing, curating and purchasing high quality classics, today is just not that day. But you endlessly inspire me and you are the first person I go to for womanly advice. So if you ever see someone digging through your old post on beauty, hair, makeup, etc… it’s probably me!

I love this honesty, Laura. So many of us have experienced seasons of sartorial challenges, and I want to keep providing inspiration, hope, and delight, no matter what the specifics are that we find ourselves in at the moment. 🩷

I heard about a ten-item wardrobe from Jennifer Scott on youtube a few years ago, and have been working on it since. Our house is small, with small closets, so why not live small? (as much as possible, and it takes time to learn how to do) She has ten pieces she loves in her closet, with a few lesser things to go with it, and she wears these items day after day for half the year, then switches. She's in the L.A. area, where she can do this. I'm in Connecticut where it seems to be a different "season" every two to three months. But I keep only the seasonal things in my closet, and I really like them all. So you don't get tired of wearing something over and over if you love it and look well in it, right?

If I could dress any way at all, without raising eyebrows, my inclination would be to look like a Trina Schart Hyman fairy tale illustration: the flowing hair, layers of gossamer clothing. But as it is, I do like loose, airy skirts and dresses. Colored tights if it's cool out. I've learned a lot from Allison Bornstein about defining one's style, from Audrey Coyne about contrast, and Alyssa Beltempo about trying to translate the images we see and like into something from our closet that we can actually put together.

I like the dress you bought for the wedding - very romantic-looking. :)

My style has changed over the years; dresses and patterns when the kids were young, monochrome when going to University in my 40s etc. Now, post menopause and change in body shape I am struggling to find my style. I kept buying new/vintage things in the hope that would be the answer. Now I have stopped buying and am wearing what I have. Then I will take a look at what I actually wear and what I actually like to wear. I want to get back to a small wardrobe that works well for me. I get overwhelmed when there are too many clothes to choose from and no space between them hanging in the wardrobe. I live in a changeable climate so that adds another layer to my wardrobe, not just summer/winter but everything in between! It's a work in progress. I too have a wedding to go to in June, I am wearing a green velvet jumpsuit that I already own and bought a new cream jacket to wear with it.

Carmella:

My wardrobe has drastically changed since. residing in Maine. To be very honest do not like it at all. When one has resided in the South( also a lot of relocations, John’s work/job). we both dressed well., Wardrobe was an big deal. My Mom, Sisters, Nieces, Nephews were and still dressed always point on.

It is difficult finding clothing that does not need tailoring for both of us, Oh so miss our tailor( Big D/Dallas), I am size 4/6, 5’8” 125 pounds and John 6’8”.

We miss our fav stores, as we are not big online shoppers especially clothing, shoes….

My Mother, was the same, she had an wardrobe, all of high quality, and she could do the Fashion Math too.

My tastes have not changed Love Dresses, Skirts, and all, think it has to do with geographic, somewhat for us,

I find at times when we go out of town( Big city/and Canada, struggle as to what to wear.(out of practice), seems to weather dictates wardrobe in this neck of the woods.

I referred back to the this, this, this. Loved them, Earthy/Elegant perfection for you.

I would say mine is Western Core, Jackie-O

Classic, Time worn.

Thank you,

Karen
