Two hours, two shelves
Simple. Reachable. Doable. Small ways. They pack enough punch to change your world, or your day. Or maybe, simply and gloriously, they’ll change your moment. Small Ways is a series about small objects, small gestures, small touches. Small ways for living well.
It had been a run-around-doing-much-without-accomplishing-much sort of day. Now time was leaning toward late afternoon and I couldn’t put my finger on a single thing finished. Couldn’t find a single check mark to put in a box. This is not how to end a day. Maybe, just maybe there was still opportunity in the waning hours for redemption.
Indeed, there was, lost in my wardrobe shelves. Two shelves inside a corner wardrobe in our bedroom that had, over the years, become the place to put (shove) everything that didn’t have a place or didn’t have time to get to its proper place. You know how it is.
I rolled up my sleeves.
In two sixty minute sweeps, I unearthed, spread out, sorted, purged, allocated, re-homed, dusted and set to rights. All the recent anxiety and the not-knowing-if-we’d-have-a-home receded and in its place came an overflowing gratitude for this little house, that it was still standing, that I had another chance to organize one small corner.
As I set the last thing in its place, a sense of calm and order settled over me and I just wanted to stand there and stare at the beauty and feel the peace of this organized space. What a gift to myself when so much of life is wildly spinning, a gift that I’ll keep receiving every time I open that door.

The boxes you see in the photo are my favorite for organizing closet spaces. They’re Bigso boxes, made in Sweden, and the best source I’ve found is Amazon.
Since Helene swept through our mountains I find myself realizing what a privilege it is to have a home and to do small things like load the dishwasher or fold clean clothes. I have walked through my days with a deep sense of gratitude that permeates every single thing I do, every item I touch, every tiny bit of beauty and comfort that is available to me. It has changed how I see the world.
That’s a great idea 💡 To make a list. I forget to do that as I sort through things. I end up picking up more of what I don’t need. 🤨
